Fiachra Murray - Primary School Maths Games Project

Primary School Maths Games Project

In June 2012 I started work on a project for St. Oliver Plunkett Primary School, Toomebridge, Co. Antrim to develop several games for primary school children to help improve their maths, specifically their times tables. I have developed two games; "Tables Torture" and "Helicopter Maths". These games were developed using Adobe Director 11.5 using Lingo script.

Tables Torture:

The aim of Tables Torture is to fill in the 12x12 grid containing the tables randomly from 1 to 12 along the top and side in as quickly a time as possible.

Features:

  • Player is given a 12x12 grid containing the tables randomly from 1 to 12 along the top and side
  • Choose between 3 difficulty settings: Easy (10 mins), Medium (7 mins) and Hard (5 mins)
  • Tab between boxes, no need to use mouse when filling in answers
  • Answers are highlighted green or red to show the player where they went wrong
  • Highscores can be saved (locally) for each difficulty if the player gets all questions correct
  • Clear, colourful interface
  • Matches user's resolution

Helicopter Maths:

In Helicopter Maths the player uses the mouse to control a helicopter which must avoid the tunnel walls. Random multiplication sums appear at a set interval and the player must fly into the correct answers.

Features:

  • Set range of times tables
  • Player is shown the correct answer
  • Game gets progressively difficult with walls closing in and sums appearing more quickly
  • Player gains health for correct answers and loses health for wrong answers and touching the walls
  • Clear, colourful interface
  • Highscores can be saved locally
  • Matches user's resolution
